Chapter 14
Brittany
WHEN VICTOR TOLD ME the name of the would-be client, Representative McCree, I felt my blood run cold. God, I had been so stupid. Well, not stupid. I guess that deep down I knew as soon as Victor said that it was a politician that it was going to be McCree. It was part of why I had been so hesitant to let him use my computer. It had never been about protecting myself in the way that Victor thought. No, it had been because I suspected that this was going to come back and bite me in the ass.
Sooner, rather than later.
It wasnât about the feds finding out that Victor had gotten into the representativeâs files. It was about the fact that I had sold my firewall as impenetrable, and once my employers found out that that wasnât the case, they were going to kill me. I knew what kind of guys I had been dealing with.
But they had paid good money, and Iâd done my best work for them. Victor had always been my kryptonite, though. Any wall that I put up, he would find a way to take it down. We knew each other far too well.
âYou donât want to mess with these guys,â I finally told Victor. âYour MC isnât going to be able to protect McCree from them when they decide to go after him. Which they will.â
âWhat are they after anyway?â Victor asked. âAnd seriously, who are they? Other politicians?â
I chewed on my lower lip. All of this was stuff I shouldnât be telling anyone. I was sworn to secrecy over all of it. I didnât want to put either Victor or myself in danger by telling him too much about the work Iâd been hired to do or the reasons behind it.
On the other hand, if McCree was trying to hire the club for his protection and Victor was trying to hack into his files, Victor could already be in danger. He needed to know what he was dealing with so that he would know better than to keep going with this. He had to make sure his MC stayed out of things.
âLook,â I finally said slowly, âI canât give you names or any of that. Iâm honestly not even sure I was given the real names of these guys. But as for why theyâre doing it, they want McCree out of officeâsome piece of legislation that theyâre trying to get through, I guess. From everything Iâve seen, McCree looks like heâs a good guy. And theyâre pissed because they havenât been able to bribe him.â I paused. âSo one way or another, theyâre going to flush him out of office.â
I could tell from the way that Victorâs hands clenched into fists that he knew just what I meant when I said, âone way or another.â These guys werenât going to stop at anything when it came to getting McCree out of office. And that was why they were such a danger to the MC.
